In Zambia, local authorities are mandated by the Local Government Act and the Solid Waste Regulation and Management Act to manage solid waste within their jurisdictions. This includes planning, organizing, and executing waste management services, and may involve partnerships with private companies or other local authorities.
In this vein, Chongwe Municipal Council’s Officers from the Public Health department visited Sylvia Masebo compound to engage the community on the need to comply with the designated franchiser in ensuring the solid waste is properly managed and disposed of to avoid having epidemic outbreaks in the compound every year.
Sylvia Masebo compound has in the past years been the hub and origin of cholera outbreaks which has so far been properly curbed due to the many interventions being put in place by the Local Authority.
The Municipality acknowledges that its responsibility goes beyond collection of waste as it is also mandated to monitor service delivery by private intuition (waste managers), monitor the management and use of waste disposal facilities and set minimum standards for levels of service.
Furthermore, the Local Authority is responsible for designation of waste disposal facilities in accordance with the Environmental Management Act of 2011, operating waste disposal facilities in compliance with the Environmental Management Act of 2011 and
Ensure compliance with these Regulations by waste generators (waste producers) and private institutions (waste managers) within the district.
