ABOUT CHONGWE


Chongwe district is situated in the Lusaka Province of the Republic of Zambia.

The district has one Constituency and 21 wards, which include Nakatindi, Chongwe, Mulenje, Njolwe, Lwimba,  Kanakantapa, Kapete, Kasenga, Kapwayambale, Chalimbana, Katoba, Ntandabale, Palabana, Chainda, Kasisi, Madido, Nchute, Chinkuli, Manyika, Ngwerere and Mwalumina wards.


The district has a dual Administrative structure with the Mayor heading the Local Authority while the District Commissioner performs Central Government functions at the District level.


The Population of Chongwe district is estimated at around 207, 613 representing 104,165 which is 50.2% of Males and 103,448 representing 49% of Females. This is according to the Constituency Population Projection for 2020.

The district’s population growth rate is estimated at 2.5 percent as extracted from the 2010 census of population and housing. It is however expected that the population of Chongwe will grow above 265,762 by the year 2030. 


Chongwe’s Administrative Centre is located 45 Kilometres East of the Central Business area of the city of Lusaka.

Chongwe was declared a district in 1993 and later upgraded to a Municipal status in February 2017 in line with Statutory Instrument Number 14 of 2017.


When the upgrade happened, Geoffrey Chumbwe became the first Mayor and Levis Mumba the first Town Clerk of the Municipality.

Mr. Jovax Ngoma then took up the office of Town Clerk towards the end of 2018 and later in April, 2019, Mr. Mulowa Sishumba took up the office.


In May 2022, Mr. Damson Mukwato assumed the office and is currently serving as Town Clerk for Chongwe Municipal Council.  

The August 12, 2021 General Elections later presented to Chongwe Municipal Council His Worship The Mayor  Mr. Christopher Habeenzu, who took office after His Worship Geoffrey Chumbwe, who had served as Mayor for Four years.
