VISIT CHONGWE

Chongwe district is situated in the Lusaka Province of the Republic of Zambia. The district has one Constituency and 21 wards, which include Nakatindi, Chongwe, Mulenje, Njolwe, Lwimba,  Kanakantapa, Kapete, Kasenga, Kapwayambale, Chalimbana, Katoba, Ntandabale, Palabana, Chainda, Kasisi, Madido, Nchute, Chinkuli, Manyika, Ngwerere and Mwalumina wards.
The district has a dual Administrative structure with the Mayor heading the Local Authority while the District Commissioner performs Central Government functions at the District level.
The capital lies at Chongwe with Chongwe Municipal Council Civic Centre serving as the administrative hub of the District, where key services, departments, and support offices are located to facilitate efficient service delivery and engagement with the community. As of the 2022 Zambian Census, the district had a population of 313,389 people.
Before 1997, Chongwe District, together with Kafue District and Rufunsa District, was known as “Lusaka Rural”.
Chongwe is home to the KK International Airport, Chalimbana University (formerly National In-service Teachers College – NISTCOL), Palabana University (formerly Palabana College), University of Lusaka (UNILUS), the prestigious Ceila Resort,TAZARA Memorial Park and many other beautiful sites that not only presents as great investment opportunities, but also contributes greatly to the economic development of our beautiful district.
chongwe district is blessed to be under the traditional leadership of Her Royal Highness Dr. Seniro Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II of the Soli people who celebrate a culturally rich Chakwela Makumbi Traditional Ceremony and a small portion of the district is under the traditional leadership of Chief Bunda Bunda.

Chongwe District boosts of hosting the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) for the Sub-Saharan region which is Kapwayambale ward along Ngwerere Road. The institute serves as a hub for:
